This week I am delighted to be able to tell you that we have two new bees on board! As of this week, Kay and I will begin mentoring Matt and Marcus and they will be bringing with them fresh ideas and a new perspective. Both artists in their own right, the boys are talented and have interesting and varied backgrounds.

First let me introduce you to Matthew Plowright of PLOWZart, who I first met at Middle Street Resource Centre a few years ago and comes along to some of the Monday night sessions. He can be seen here with one of his earlier creations Rodger the Prawn who has a magical pantry AND his own Facebook page. Matthew describes himself as a surrealist and from what I have seen from his work over the years I would have to agree. My favourites are the ones that have a ‘yellow submarine’ feel to them so I bought one at the last art fair he was at, although I am loving some of his new work too.

Next up is Marcus Gilmore who is a graphic designer and illustrator. I met Marcus through his mother Marysia, who is the founder of Art, Culture,Tourism (ACT) and introduced him to art at an early age.

In this photograph Marcus is showing some of his work to the Mayor of Nottingham, which was on display as part of an exhibition at P Spowage Art Gallery in the city earlier this year. He also produces a variety of styles but I really like his freehand sketches best of all, as I think they show off his observational talent really well. Marcus and I have been to the same life drawing class, though at different times, and the sketches he produces are much better than mine – so it was a bit of a relief we missed each other.

Both young men are established artists and have exhibited and sold their work at art fairs and craft events, so we are really excited that they have chosen to share their talents with us and are really looking forward to collaborating with them this autumn.

Until next week

Stay sweet

The Bee
